Objective.
The objective of this exercise is to practise the use of stem-changing verbs in Spanish.

Method.
By now, you have learned two stem changes in Spanish verbs. In both cases, there is a specific vowel in the verbal stem (e, o) which, when stressed, becomes a diphtong (ie, ue). These changes may occur in any verb, regardless of the group it belongs to.

The final change you will learn in Spanish only occurs in the “-ir” group. Once again, these verbs will have the vowel “e” in their stem. However, this time the “e” will change into a different vowel, which is “i”, instead of a diphtong. Consult the below table to see how such verbs behave. Just like in previous stem changes, it will only happen when the stem is stressed. The changes are bolded and coloured in purple. Stressed syllables are underlined. Note how the irregularity follows the L-shape pattern.
