Objective.
The objective of this exercise is to practise the use of stem-changing verbs.

Method.
By now, you have learned that some Spanish verbs undergo a stem change in conjugation. Specifically, you have practised using verbs with the vowel “e” becoming the diphtong “ie”. This is not the only stem change that appears in Spanish verbs.

Some verbs that have the vowel “o” in their stem will undergo a similar change. The vowel “o” can only turn into the diphtong “ue”. The diphtong only occurs when the stem is stressed in conjugation, which is why no diphtongs occur in the infinitive. Below, you will find a table with the conjugated forms of such a verb. The irregularity is bolded and coloured in orange and the stressed syllable is underlined. Note the L-shape which follows the irregularities.

Note: Just like with the diphtong “ie”, there is no way to tell which verbs have the “ue” diphtong. You will learn this by practising as time goes by. However, once you know which verbs undergo the change, you will already know when precisely it occurs.
