What is Exercise Physiology?
Exercise Physiology is the study of how the body responds to physical activity and how physical activity affects overall health. It looks at how the body produces energy, how it stores and uses that energy, and how it adapts to physical stress. Exercise physiologists work with people of all ages and abilities, from elite athletes to those recovering from injury or illness. They can help individuals set achievable fitness goals, design individualized exercise programs, monitor progress toward those goals, teach proper technique and form during exercise, provide guidance on nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices, as well as assess risk for safe participation in physical activity.Exercise physiology is a rapidly growing field that combines knowledge from many disciplines including anatomy & physiology; kinesiology; nutrition; biomechanics; psychology; sports medicine; pharmacology; pathology; cardiopulmonary care etc. Therefore an exercise physiologist needs to have a good understanding of each discipline in order to provide effective advice on exercise prescription for general health or specific performance goals. Generally speaking an exercise physiologist will assess clients using tools such as body composition analysis (e.g., bioelectrical impedance), cardiovascular testing (e.g., VO2 max testing), musculoskeletal assessment (testing range of motion) etc in order to design an appropriate program tailored towards their needs/goals while factoring any contraindications present. Furthermore they may assist medical professionals in patient rehabilitation by creating safe strategies for getting them back into active lifestyles following injury or illness through gradually increasing intensity levels over time which has been shown to improve overall recovery outcomes when done properly under supervised instruction rather than attempting to do too much too soon which could cause further problems due to improper technique/form or over-exertion leading potentially leading into more serious issues such as joint pain/injury related issues so having someone who knows what they’re doing is essential.
