Exercise 4

The appropriate management for bleeding depends on the type and severity of the wound. In this case, the boy had a $textbf{puncture wound}$ from stepping on the tack, which is a small but deep piercing of the skin. It is recommended to wash the wound with mild soap and clean running water. After that, take the boy to the doctor. A puncture wound in the foot can result in infection. He needs to get a tetanus vaccine if he has fallen behind in his vaccination schedule.

Exercise 5
Step 1

Any severe open wound would require immediate professional care since it could lead to excessive blood loss and infection.

These are the following situations that need medical services:

* $textit{Lacerations}$ that are deep which doesn’t stop bleeding, and especially the ones on the face and neck
* A $textit{puncture}$ wound that is deep, dirty, or in the foot
* $textit{Avulsions}$ in which the skin or tissue is partly or completely torn

These wounds may require stitches and evaluation of tetanus vaccination history. If the patient is not updated in his or her vaccine or booster, he or she is required to take a shot.

textbf{Of Wounds and Healing}

It was a lovely summer day for everyone at the beach. The sun was up and waves crash along the shore hitting every pebble that meets its path. Children were gleefully building their sandcastles and disturbing little crabs from their burrows. It was picture-perfect, but not for Harvey. He is not your typical teenager. He is not fond of the world outside his bedroom. He loves reading books and extremely curious about the human body. He enjoys watching medical dramas on tv, admiring the doctors on the show, and wants to be one someday. But that day, he was one bored teenager who wishes for their vacation to be over.

It was the early afternoon of that particular summer day when Harvey decided to go out on a walk along the more secluded part of the beach. There, he found peace and quiet away from the bustling noise at the beachfront. He found a hammock hanging on a huge tree surrounded by rock formations. Harvey rushed to the hammock and started reading as the cool sea breeze brush through her face and hair. He was having the best time of his life alone at the beach that he did not realize that he fell asleep. But, he was awakened from his nap when he heard a voice calling for help not so far from where he was. He followed the voice and saw a lady on the sand lying on her side. She was holding her leg and was crying in pain. Harvey hurried to help the lady and noticed that she has an avulsed wound on the left leg that is bleeding profusely. He immediately asked what happened and the lady told him that she was trying to get to the top of one of the large rock formations when she slipped and hit her leg on the rock when he fell. Harvey tried to calm her down and recalled the things he read about first aid. He also tried to remember what the characters did in that particular episode of his favorite medical tv series when they were trying to control a bleeding wound. He elevated the lady’s leg above the level of the heart and saw that the bleeding stopped a little. He did not want to touch the wound since his hands were also dirty. He told the lady to wait for him as he calls for help and get a first aid kit. Harvey hurried to the beachfront and told the lifeguard about the incident.

Step 2
2 of 3
Harvey and the lifeguard rushed to the injured lady and when they got there, Harvey asked the lifeguard if he can do the first aid to the lady. The lifeguard approved but he told Harvey that he will guide him in the steps. Harvey laid the first aid kit and looked for sterile gloves to avoid infection. He got some gauze and placed pressure on the wound to try and control the bleeding. The first gauze got soaked with blood so the lifeguard told Harvey to replace the gauze with a new one. The bleeding eventually stopped, so Harvey and the lifeguard secured the fresh gauze with tape and kept it snug but loose enough that they can still feel the lady’s pulse. They eventually called an ambulance to take the lady to a hospital to have proper treatment.

With everything that happened, Harvey’s desire to become a doctor became stronger. And he thought maybe going out sometimes isn’t that bad after all.
