Section 1.2: What Affects Your Health?
The three types of environment include the following:
1. Physical environment: This is composed of all the features in the environment that affect your health. These features are the neighborhood and school safety, the air and water quality, the availability of recreational and educational facilities, and the access to medical care.
2. Social environment: This is made up of all the people around you, especially those that you interact with such as your family and friends.
3. Culture: This refers to the collective beliefs, values, principles, norms, customs, and behaviors of a particular group, community, or nation.
1. Characters in films and TV programs who are engaged in using smoke, alcohol, and drugs may give false impressions to the viewers. This can cause people to imitate these negative behaviors in real life.
2. There are thousands of information about health that you see and hear on the internet, radio, and television. However, not all of them are true and valid. In this case, people may get misinformed if they get wrong health information from unreliable sources.
Moreover, if the community lacks access to health care, recreational, and educational facilities, then it would negatively impact the health of the people. These facilities play a vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, particularly in improving our physical and mental health. They also serve as the support system of the entire community.
2. Maintain a normal weight
3. Get adequate rest
4. Stay active
From here, examine where changes can be made if there are negative stressors or influences affecting him/her. An example would be having difficulty with the material in a class. You can brainstorm ways to assist him/her such as forming study groups or looking for a tutor to help alleviate the stress. This should reduce the stress and maintain a more positive aspect for his/her mental health. Since mental health also influences physical and social health, it is important to ensure a balance so that he/she can engage in positive health behaviors.
Since peers play a significant role in an individual’s health behaviors, a positive group of friends can help him adjust and engage in more healthful behaviors. If he has friends who are more positive influences such as those engaging in tutoring or community service, then he is more likely to adapt and engage in positive actions.
