What is Counseling Psychology?
Counseling psychology is a type of psychological practice that involves helping people improve their mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. It focuses on understanding the individual’s life experiences in order to assist them in creating positive change and growth. Counseling psychologists also work with individuals, couples, families and groups in order to create healthy relationships and foster positive development. The primary goal of counseling psychology is to help clients learn how to manage stressors associated with everyday living. This can include identifying unhealthy patterns, developing more effective coping strategies for difficult times, addressing issues related to mental health such as depression or anxiety, managing interpersonal conflicts within relationships or examining how past experiences may be impacting current functioning. Counseling psychologists strive to provide an environment where clients feel safe enough to discuss their thoughts and feelings openly while they work towards resolving any underlying issues. Another important aspect of counseling psychology involves assessing an individual’s strengths and weaknesses along with providing them concrete steps towards reaching long term goals such as improved quality of life or increased job satisfaction. Counseling psychologists often use a variety of interventions depending on the needs of the client including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) or person centered approaches among others. In addition, counselors may also utilize art/play therapy techniques when working with children as well as offer educational support services related to academic concerns if needed (e.g., tutoring).
