What is Food And Nutrition Board?
The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) is an organization dedicated to improving nutritional health for all. It was established in 1941 by the National Research Council to provide scientific advice on nutrition, dietary guidelines, and food safety. The FNB is part of the Institute of Medicine, and has a wide range of activities that span across nutrition science research, education and outreach, policy analysis, standards-setting and more. The FNB’s mission is to improve health by promoting access to safe and nutritious foods; assessing the evidence-based science of nutrition; developing best practices for dietary assessment; making recommendations for dietary guidelines; setting standards for safe foods; providing guidance on labeling information; assessing nutrient requirements; and informing public policy decisions related to nutrition. The FNB sets Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) which are scientifically-based reference values used in the assessment of an individual’s nutritional status. DRIs include Estimated Average Requirements (EARs), Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), Adequate Intakes (AIs) as well as Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs). These values serve as a guide for health professionals when making food choices or prescribing diets that meet individual needs. The organization also develops policies concerning food safety, including advice about proper cooking temperatures, storage times/conditions for different types of foods as well as guidance on food additives or contaminants. In addition, it provides educational materials designed to help both consumers and healthcare professionals make informed decisions about their diet. Overall, the FNB strives to ensure that everyone has access to safe and nutritious food sources while helping them make better informed decisions about their diet through its work in research, education & outreach policy analysis & standards-setting activities.
