Section 30.3: Amphibians

Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 1
Amphibians live in water as larva and land as an adult. They breath with lungs as an adult and have moist skin that contains mucous glands. They also lack scales and claws.
Exercise 2
Step 1
1 of 1
Adaptations include bones in the limbs and limb girdles becoming stronger allowing efficient movement. Lungs and breathing tubes enabled them to breathe air. The sternum formed a bony shield that supports and protects the internal organs.
Exercise 3
Step 1
1 of 1
**Amphibians** are a group of vertebrate species that is characterized by having *double life*. Their larval stage lives on the water and the adult stage lives on land–having lungs, moist skin, and mucous glands for respiration. Modern amphibians are classified and grouped into three: **Salamanders, Caecilians, and Frogs (and toads)**.
Exercise 4
Step 1
1 of 1
Amphibian eggs are not encased with a shell and have to be kept moist or they dry out. The eggs are encased in jelly and attach to underwater plants to protect them from predators. These are two characteristics that restrict reproduction to moist environments.
Exercise 5
Step 1
1 of 2
In recent events, scientists have noticed that amphibian populations are declining worldwide. They do not know yet the cause of this, but it is possible that amphibians species are susceptible to various environmental and global threats such as ozone layer depletion, deforestation, land and water pollution, diseases, and an increasing number of predators.
Step 2
2 of 2
In order to help in minimizing the declining population of these species, a group of scientists extensively set up monitoring programs that cover the entire North America, with the aim of recognizing the specific call or communication species such as bullfrogs, and crickets.
Exercise 6
Step 1
1 of 1
Caecilian mostly live hidden in the ground, which makes them one of the least known amphibians. Eye sight is not useful underground due to the lack of light. This led to the caecilian being blind or having poor eyesight!
