Section 3.1: What is Ecology?

Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 3
**Biosphere** consists of all life on Earth and all of its other parts in which life can exist. This includes land, water, and the atmosphere. It also contains various organisms that interact with each other.
Step 2
2 of 3
Living things are arranged and organized in their given habitats in different levels which makes up the structure of the organization.
Step 3
3 of 3
These levels are: **Individual organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome,** and **biosphere**
Exercise 2
Step 1
1 of 2
**Ecological research** is any study that involves the relationship between organisms and their environment. Usually, studies about how ecosystems function and the different processes occurring are its focus.
Step 2
2 of 2
There are three methods involved in ecological research:

1. **Observation** which can answer simple and direct questions about the field.

2. **Experimenting** which involves testing the hypothesis in an *in vitro* setting.

3. **Modeling**, which makes use different models such as mathematical formulas to analyze a given data and answer the question about the field.

Land: Farmers interact with land by planting crops. All humans interact with land by walking and standing on it. Also some companies store radioactive waste in the land.

Water: All humans have the drink water periodically, and nearly all organisms require water to survive and reproduce. Other ways include: washing one’s face, using water to cook, swimming.

Air: Air produces wind that people feel everyday. Air contains vital molecules such as oxygen and nitrogen. Many times air controls the temperature of a certain location. Air is used to power balloons.

. There are several ecological methods that could be used to determine whether the water in a certain stream is safe to drink. One of them is experimenting method, which involves taking samples of the water in test tube and sending it to a lab for test on toxins, other harmful chemicals and parasites.

One of the ecological phenomena that we can study through modeling is the effect of tsunami in the marine ecosystem and the coast. Since a tsunami is too complicated and too dangerous to study in an actual environment, a model can be useful in understanding the conditions, particularly how tsunamis are formed, how it can be detected, and how it can damage the ecosystem. In this way, people can be prepared in facing this natural disaster by building structures to help lessen the damage and protect the ecosystem.
