Section 22.5: Angiosperms–Flowering Plants
**Monocots** are plants characterized by one or single cotyledon or embryonic leaf. This is a type of flowering plant that have parallel-veins leaves and grass-like vascular bundles in the stem.
**Biennial** plant species complete their life cycle in two years, then die after the course of the growing season. Biennial plants germinate their roots, stems, and leaves during the first year, then followed by a new stem, new leaves, and flowers during their second year.
On the contrary, a stem that is softer and smoother than woody plants are called herbaceous plants. They have thinner cell walls which do not produce a woody texture in their stems. Examples of herbaceous plants are some flowering plants such as dandelions, sunflowers, and petunias.
