**Protists** are the first eukaryotic species on Earth, which appeared around 1.5 billion years ago. This group is composed of diverse organisms which can be a heterotroph (animal-like protists or fungus-like protists) or an autotroph (plant-like protists). They are neither animal, plant, bacteria or fungi.

Margulis’s theory states that the first eukaryotic cell is emerged from symbiotic relationships of many prokaryotic cells. For example, it states that chloroplast was prokaryotic cell that lived symbiotically inside a large prokaryotic cell. Later on, it becomes eukaryotic cell.
