Step 1

**Nutrients** are substances found in our food that give our body the energy and materials needed for our growth, development, and repair. Our body requires us to have these six substances: **water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals**.
Exercise 2
Step 1
1 of 2
Nutrients are substances found in our food that give our body the energy and materials needed for our growth, development, and repair. Our body requires us to have these six substances: water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Step 2
2 of 2
**Water** is the most important nutrient needed by our body. Every cell in our body needs water because most of the chemical processes have to happen in a water medium. Water is the main component of the blood, lymph, and some important extracellular fluids.
Exercise 3
Step 1
1 of 2
**Carbohydrates** are the main source of energy for the body. This complex molecule is broken down by various enzymes in the body and it is absorbed by our bloodstream and transported to our cells for use.
Step 2
2 of 2
However, carbohydrates that contain complex cellulose polymers (often called fiber), cannot be broken down by the body because we do not have enzymes that can break them. However, the bulk supply of fiber in our diet helps our gastrointestinal tract to keep waste materials and food to move in their respective destination.
Exercise 4
Step 1
1 of 1
Vitamins and minerals are similar as they both provide necessary nutrients to your body. They are different because vitamins are organic molecules whereas minerals are inorganic molecules.
