Section 7-2: Properties, Names, and Formulas

Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 2
Solutions of both acids and bases are composed of positive and negative ions. These when dissolved in water become disassociated and free to move and therefore in presence of a potential difference they move to their oppositely charged electrodes/terminals. These mobile ions the aqueous state of acids and bases make them good conductors of electricity.

Exercise 2
Step 1
1 of 2
Hydroxides of metals are bases, therefore KOH and barium hydroxide solution are bases.
Step 2
2 of 2
Acids are substance that produce H$^+$ ions as the only positive ions in their aqueous solutions, therefore HNO$_3$ is an acid. It is important to note here that KHCO$_3$ and sodium hydrogen carbonate solution are not acids. They are actually acidic salts formed by the partial neutralization of the dibasic carbonic acid; H$_2$CO$_3$.
Exercise 3
Step 1
1 of 6
a. KOH$_{text{(aq)}}$ is potassium hydroxide.
Step 2
2 of 6
b. HNO$_{3text{(aq)}}$ is hydrogen nitrate this is more commonly known as nitric acid.
Step 3
3 of 6
c. Barium hydroxide solution is is Ba(OH)$_{2text{(aq)}}$.
Step 4
4 of 6
d. KHCO$_{3text{(aq)}}$ is potassium hydrogen carbonate solution.
Step 5
5 of 6
e. Sodium hydrogen carbonate solution is is NaHCO$_{3text{(aq)}}$.

Exercise 4
Result
1 of 1
Hydrogen ions represented by the chemical symbol H$^+$ in acids are responsible for the acidic properties of acids.
Exercise 5
Result
1 of 1
Hydroxide ions represented by the chemical symbol OH$^-$ in bases are responsible for the basic properties of bases.
Exercise 6
Step 1
1 of 2
Proteins are digested in the stomach and for doing so, the stomach produces gastric juices that are extremely acidic in nature. On vomiting, these acids travel up the esophagus, into the mouth and comes in contact with teeth to erode them.
Result

Gastric juices in the stomach are acidic in nature.
Exercise 7
Step 1
1 of 3
a. The fluid of the battery can be injected out using a syringe and tested with any litmus (or any other indicator) to determine whether it is an acid or a base. (Battery solution is acidic in nature and therefore litmus will turn red.)
Step 2
2 of 3
b. Safety gloves must be worn at all times during the administration of this experiment.

Exercise 8
Step 1
1 of 1
Acid erosion of teeth is due to intake of foods that contain acids. A prime example of these foods are carbonated drinks also known as soda that contain carbonic acid. Such drinks should be avoided to prevent teeth erosion.
