Section 3-7: Organ Transplantation

Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 1
Living donor transplants are organs donated during the life of the donor while deceased donor transplants are organs donated after the death of the donor. Deceased donor transplants are more common because many organs like eyes, heart, lungs, etc can not be donated during the life of the donor.

Some organs are necessary to sustain life like heart for pumping blood, eyes for sight etc and therefore can not be donated during the course of the life of the donor.
Exercise 3
Step 1
1 of 2
Organs like kidneys and one of liver can be donated during the life of the donor. In such donations, the organ is surgically removed from the body of the donor and implanted in the body of the recipient. In such cases, the donor and the recipient are usually close family members so that the organs have similar genetic makeup and therefore the body can easily adapt to the transplanted organ.

Exercise 4
Step 1
1 of 2
The body of the recipient of the organ is at risk of going through a reaction. Some times the body is unable to recognize the transplanted organ as an organ and begin to destroy it considering it to be an alien particle in the body. Such reactions can be controlled by treatment.
Step 2
2 of 2
If one of the two kidneys fails, a person can still live a normal life using one kidney. For a living donor this becomes a problem. Having donated his/her second organ, the failure of the only organ can make once a donor a recipient. It is therefore that deceased organ transplants remain a popular choice instead of living donor transplants.
Exercise 5
Step 1
1 of 2
Xenotransplantation is organ transplantation across species; usually from animals to humans. It is a controversial idea because the genetic makeup of the animal organ(s) is different from that of humans and its(their) functions as well as capability may be different from whats required by the human body.

Arguments for organ donation are that once someone has passed away, they no longer require their organs to function and those organs could benefit someone else. Arguments against are that the families may wish that the person’s body and soul be untouched/unharmed once passed away. I understand both arguments and think both are fair. I have no stance, since while I am an organ donor, everyone should be entitled to their own choice
