Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 7
In this section you are asked to partner up and go through each of the four pictures, asking your partner if they like each thing. Once you and your partner have both asked and answered, report your findings to the class.
Step 2
2 of 7
The first image appears to show a student doing homework (*hacer la tarea*). The subject of your question will be the familiar “you”, since you are talking to a classmate. The *tú* form of *gustar* is, as you know, *te gusta(n)*. On page 86, you learned that *gusta* will always be in the singular form if it precedes an infinitive. *Hacer* is an infinitive, so your question will be “¿Te gusta hacer la tarea?”
Step 3
3 of 7
The second image shows a boy listening to music (*escuchar música*). Just like in the last step, the singular, *tú* form of *gustar* will be used, since you’re asking your classmate the question, and following *gustar* with an infinitive. This gives you the question, *”¿Te gusta escuchar música?”*.
Step 4
4 of 7
The third image shows two kids shopping at a mall. You learned this phrase on page 83, *”ir al centro comercial”*. Just like the rest of these questions, you will combine *te gusta* and the activity containing the infinitive (*ir al centro comercial*), to give you “¿te gusta ir al centro comercial?”.
Step 5
5 of 7
The fourth and final image shows a girl sitting outside reading a magazine (*leer revistas*). To ask your partner if they like to read magazines, you will use the singular, *tú* form of *gustar* followed by the activity using the infinitive. This will give you the question, “¿Te gusta leer revistas?”.
Step 6
6 of 7
To answer these questions, you have two options: yes, or no. If you do enjoy the activity, you can respond with *”sí”*, followed by the *yo* form of *gustar*, *me gusta*. Since you will still be following “*me gusta”* with an infinitive, you must use the singular *gusta* and not *gustan*. For example, “*sí, me gusta leer revistas”*.
If you don’t enjoy the activity, you will use *no*, twice, followed by the same construction as the affirmative response above. For example, “*no, no me gusta leer revistas”*.
Step 7
7 of 7
To tell your class what you’ve learned, you will simply want to tell your class “he/she likes/doesn’t like _______”. . Since your subject is he or she, you will use *le gusta*, continuing to only use the singular *gusta* since an infinitive follows it. If you choose to include your partner’s name, remember to precede it with “*a”*. For example, “*a Roberto no le gusta escuchar música*”. This isn’t an issue if you simply use “*le gusta”*.
To say your partner doesn’t like something, simply add *no* before *le gusta*.
