Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 7
In this question, you are to take turns asking a partner whether or not they like the things pictured, and then clarify why they do or don’t like them. The example reads:
A: “Do you like sports?”
B: “No, I don’t like sports because they are boring.”
Step 2
2 of 7
Since these answers are subjective, you’ll be given a few pointers on how to correctly answer these questions for yourself.

When asking your partner the initial question, be sure to use the *tú* form of *gustar*, *te gusta(n)*.

Step 3
3 of 7
Follow *te gustan* with the noun pictured. If the noun is plural (*las fiestas*, for example), use *gustan*. If it’s singular, use *gusta*.
If you need a refresher on vocabulary, look back at pages 56, 57 and 62.
Since this is a question, you will write the ¿? around the sentence to make it a question. For example, *¿te gusta la comida mexicana?*
Step 4
4 of 7
To answer these questions, you will be using the *yo* form of *gustar*, which is *me gusta(n)*. Remember to use *gusta* if the object is singular, and *gustan* if it is plural.
Your two possible answers are *sí, me gusta(n) _______(object)…* or *no, no me gusta(n) _________(object)…*. Remember that the object, in this case, will always appear with its definite article preceding it (*los animales, la musica*).
Step 5
5 of 7
Following your yes or no response, you are to continue the sentence by saying “…because _______(reason)”.
On page 62 you learned that “because” in Spanish is *porque*, not to be confused with *¿por qué?* (why?).
Step 6
6 of 7
Following *porque* you will use the form of *ser* that agrees with the plurality of the noun. If you’re saying you like *los animales*, you would use *son*. But if you were saying you like *la comida mexicana*, you would use *es*, since *la* is indicative of the singular form.
Step 7
7 of 7
Finally, choose an adjective that makes both logical and grammatical sense considering your noun. If your noun is *la pizza*, you might say *sí, me gusta la pizza porque es delicioso*. But if your noun is the plural *las peliculas*, you might say *no, no me gustan las peliculas porque son aburridas*.
Note how *gustar*, the article, the noun, the form of *ser* AND the adjective all have to agree in terms of plurality.
