What is 100 Years Ago?

One hundred years ago, the world was a very different place. Technology had advanced to a point where some new inventions were being developed, but many of them could not have been imagined today. In 1920, the world had just seen World War I come to an end and was on the verge of experiencing The Great Depression. In 1920, most people still lived in rural areas and worked primarily in agriculture. Women were rarely allowed to work outside of the home and had few legal rights. Racial segregation and discrimination were rampant in many parts of the world. Communication was limited since there were no cell phones or computers yet; instead, most communication happened through telegrams or mailed letters. Automobiles had become popular but air travel was still emerging as a mode of transportation for wealthy travelers only. The advances made in medicine over the last hundred years are remarkable; however, 100 years ago medical treatments for illnesses such as cancer or diabetes didn’t exist yet, so mortality rates from these diseases were much higher than they are today. Vaccines for several common preventable diseases hadn’t been invented yet either, so child mortality rates were also much higher than they are today. Overall, life 100 years ago was very different from what it is now due to changes in technology and medical advancements that have improved lives around the world since then making it possible for us to enjoy longer lifespans with greater access to information and opportunity than ever before.
