What is World Trade Center?
The World Trade Center (WTC) was a complex of seven buildings in lower Manhattan, New York City, that became an iconic symbol of American resilience and perseverance when it was destroyed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the 1960s, the WTC included four towers: Two 110-story towers known as One World Trade Center (the North Tower) and Two World Trade Center (the South Tower); a 47-story building known as Seven World Trade Center; and two 9-story buildings known as Four World Trade Center and Five World Trade Center. The twin towers were among the tallest buildings in the world at 1,368 feet (417 meters) each. The tragic events of 9/11 began when two hijacked airplanes flew into both towers at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m., respectively. As flames engulfed them from within, thousands of people inside were forced to evacuate while many others stayed behind to help save lives or carry out duties associated with their jobs. The South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m., followed by the North Tower at 10:28 a.m., sending clouds of smoke billowing into downtown Manhattan that could be seen for miles away. In response to these devastating events, U.S President George W Bush declared war on terrorism – including those responsible for planning and executing this attack – leading to military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq over the following years with mixed results that continue to this day worldwide conflict rages on around us today due to this horrific event which changed our society forever. In 2014 , after 13 years since its destruction , work was completed on One World Trade Centre. This 1 , 776 foot tall skyscraper replaced its predecessor as one of America’s tallest building symbolising resilience against tragedy. This new construction incorporated state-of-the art security features such as blast resistant windows , emergency stairwells with pressurised air systems ensuring survivability within any emergency situation. The building also contains 2 observation decks open year round giving visitors an opportunity to view amazing views from high above Manhattan with safety measures taken into consideration. The legacy of tragedy will never be forgotten but these measures have given Americans hope for future protection against terrorism while honouring those who lost their lives during this time period .
