What is Social Change?

Social change is one of the most significant aspects of modern life. It refers to any alteration or transformation that occurs in a society’s structure, values, norms and institutions. Social change can take place due to a variety of reasons including economic, political, technological and environmental factors. It can also be seen as a result of individual and collective actions taken by people to improve their lives or to challenge existing social arrangements.In recent years there has been an increase in the number of social movements aimed at challenging existing social structures and seeking greater justice and equity in our societies. Examples include movements such as Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street and Me Too which have sought to challenge racism, economic inequality and sexual harassment respectively. These movements have utilized a variety of tactics such as protests, strikes and campaigns to bring about positive changes in society. They have had considerable successes in raising awareness about societal issues and creating real changes on the ground for those affected by them.The advancement of technology has also played a major role in facilitating social change over the last few decades through its ability to connect people from around the world with one another quickly, easily and cheaply. This has enabled unprecedented levels of collaboration between people from different countries who could not otherwise have met each other face-to-face or even communicated via other means such as telephone or mail services. Technology has allowed for increased access to information which can be used both positively (in terms of education) but negatively (in terms of propaganda). Overall it is clear that social change is an ever-present element within our societies today; it takes place on multiple levels ranging from local communities up to global networks through various agents such as individuals, groups or organisations working together towards common goals.
