What is Limits?
Limits are a part of life. We are all subject to them in one way or another, whether we choose to acknowledge them or not. Limits can be mental, physical, financial, societal, environmental or spiritual. They can help us stay within our comfort zone and enable us to function efficiently in a given context.Mental limits refer to the boundaries of what we think is possible for ourselves and others – our beliefs about what is achievable and realistic. Physical limits refer to the limitations of our bodies and their capabilities – from physical disability through to age-related decline in health. Financial limits refer to the boundaries of what we can realistically afford – from daily necessities through to luxuries and investments. Societal limits refer to the restrictions placed on us by society – from laws that prevent certain behaviour through to cultural expectations around gender roles and social norms. Environmental limits refer to the boundaries imposed on us by nature – natural disasters, climate change or simply living with limited resources such as water or energy. Spiritual limits refer both internal beliefs about life’s purpose as well as external influences such as religious teachings which may shape attitudes towards particular activities or behaviours.Limits can both constrain us by preventing us from doing something but they can also be empowering by providing structure and direction in our lives which enables us achieve greater things than if we had no limit at all. Each person will have different levels of tolerance for different types of limit so it’s important that each individual assesses their own comfort level before pushing themselves beyond their own personal boundaries.
