For many years, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 caused many difficulties among Asian people attempting to immigrate into the United States. Immigrants would arrive at Angel Island where Chinese men would get separated from women and children and be detained into crowded rooms and stay there for an undefined amount of time. The men would engrave poems on the walls to inspire others, communicate, or share their stories. The walls were filled with these poems. In the future, it became extremely difficult to even see the poems. Eventually, efforts were made to preserve the poems in a new State Park to inspire modern poets and scholars.
