Waverly is a young Asian girl from a modest family in Chinatown. By way of a Christmas gift, she learned chess and became a national champion. Through chess, she learned many “why’s” others did not and could not teach her. Her mother spent much of her time teaching her ways to be better and learn for herself, but at one point, Waverly becomes very angry with her mother because she feels she is showing her off for her chess skills and runs away. When she returns, her mother shows she does not want her to be a part of the family if she is not proud of them just as they are of her and her chess skills.
