Pi is on a raft that is attached to the lifeboat. The lifeboat contains a large tiger, the food he needs and 3 other dead animals. He has to stay on the raft he constructed to stay away from the hungry tiger.

A) The only bait he has is his shoe, which he uses quickly without catching anything.
B) A school of flying fish swarm around the boat as they are being chased by dorado and shark. Many land in the boat and so he uses that as bait once he works up the courage to kill it.

A). when he kills the flying fish, it is his first kill and he said it was a mistake on the flying fish that it happened in the boat. The dorado was a brave, sanguinary moment in his life. Showing he conquered something he could not do before.
B). He believes one was a mistake and one was a choice and a means to an end of saving his life from the tiger. He also said you can get used to anything, even killing

Pi was stranded on a raft while a tiger occupied the main life boat. He knew he needed to find food to appease the tiger because the dead animals would not satisfy his hunger needs. Pi decided to try fishing, but only had his shoe as bait. This attempt with the shoe was a failure, but was followed by a surprising show of flying fish being chased by dorado’s. Pi took one that landed in the boat, and once he overcame his guilt and shame for killing the fish, he successfully caught a large dorado and tossed it into the boat for the tiger to eat. He fell asleep proud and anticipating the next day of fishing.
