Survivor guilt is often carried by soldiers and occurs because of the bond and love they share during their tours of duty. The guilt is not a direct result of an action they did or chose to do, but rather through the series of “what’ifs” after a tragedy happened with someone they worked with or were around. The author cites 2 different examples of this-one where the tragedy happened after the soldier was home and the other during the line of duty. This type of guilt is not new and does not just occur with soldiers, several examples from many years ago stating how and why the complex exists were cited as well.
