What is Two Factor Theory?
The Two Factor Theory, developed by industrial psychologist Frederick Herzberg in the 1950s, is a psychological theory that explains job motivation and satisfaction. The theory states that job satisfaction comes from intrinsic (internal) factors, such as personal achievement and recognition for one’s work, while dissatisfaction comes from extrinsic (external) factors such as working conditions and pay. According to Herzberg’s research, providing better pay or working conditions will not increase job satisfaction; instead it can only reduce dissatisfaction. The primary concept behind the Two Factor Theory is that intrinsic factors are motivating while extrinsic factors are hygienic. Intrinsic factors provide an individual with a sense of accomplishment or personal growth. Examples would include challenging work assignments, recognition for good performance, opportunities for advancement and responsibility within a role or organization. On the other hand, extrinsic factors are seen as hygiene elements which must be present in order to avoid dissatisfaction but do not provide motivation if met beyond a certain threshold level. Examples include salary levels, fringe benefits such as health insurance and vacation time allowances, physical environment of the workplace and interpersonal relations with bosses or colleagues.To gain maximum job satisfaction from employees according to this theory requires both positive intrinsic motivators plus minimum satisfactory hygiene elements like those mentioned above. Focusing on these two areas ensures that employees feel their work has meaning and value but also have their basic needs met by their employer through adequate compensation packages etc. By understanding the Two Factor Theory employers can create environments which foster employee engagement in order to maximize productivity and efficiency in their organization while also increasing employee morale & satisfaction over time.
