What is Prejudice?

Prejudice is an attitude based on a preconceived opinion or judgment toward someone or something. It can be caused by ignorance, fear, or simply lack of understanding. Prejudice has been around since the beginning of time and continues to exist in modern society today. Although prejudice is still pervasive in many places, it’s important to recognize that it does not have to be accepted as a given part of life. By understanding its various forms and causes, we can take steps to reduce prejudice in our own lives and communities.One form of prejudice is racial discrimination, which occurs when people are treated differently because of their race or ethnicity. This type of bias can lead to unequal access to education, employment opportunities, housing, health care services and other resources. Racial discrimination also leads to social exclusion from certain areas or activities within a community-based on skin color alone further deepening existing inequality between different ethnic groups.Gender-based prejudice is another common form of bias that manifests itself through sexism and gender stereotypes; this often takes the form of treating men better than women due to traditional societal roles assigned by gender rather than individual merit or ability. For example, women may experience lower wages for the same work as men due solely to their gender a phenomenon known as the gender wage gap.
