What is Healthy People 2020?
Healthy People 2020 is a national program developed by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The program was first launched in 2010 as part of the Affordable Care Act. The goal of Healthy People 2020 is to improve the health of all Americans, particularly in areas where progress has been slow or stagnant for many years. To achieve this goal, Healthy People 2020 focuses on four overarching goals: increasing quality and years of healthy life; eliminating health disparities; creating social and physical environments that promote good health for all; and improving access to quality health care services. The program sets 10-year objectives for improving the nation’s health in 42 different topic areas such as heart disease, nutrition, mental health, HIV/AIDS, cancer prevention, alcohol use disorder treatment, reproductive health care services and more. Under each topic area are hundreds of measurable objectives that focus on population groups most at risk for poor outcomes related to their particular topic area. For example, under nutrition objectives there are measurable targets to reduce obesity among preschoolers aged 2-5 years old by 8% between 2008-2018 and reduce obesity among adolescents aged 12-19 years old by 5% between 2009-2019. In addition to setting specific objectives under each topic area within Healthy People 2020 are strategies designed to help meet these objectives such as providing access to healthy foods through food stamps programs or increasing public awareness about healthy eating habits through media campaigns targeting young people. To ensure these goals are achieved it is important that individuals take part in activities that support them such as eating well balanced meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables; getting regular physical activity; quitting smoking if you smoke; limiting alcohol consumption if you drink alcohol; addressing mental health issues if needed; taking advantage of preventive care services like immunizations or screenings; reducing stress levels when possible; maintaining a healthy weight with regular exercise or other lifestyle changes like portion control when necessary ;and seeking medical care when needed. Taking proactive steps towards leading a healthier life can help make sure we reach our goals outlined in Healthy People 2020 over the next decade.
