Planning and preparation of teaching is supremely important, the teacher and teaching assistant need to work together to achieve the best learning result. Lesson plans and structures will be implemented and will be catered for each learner; they will include teaching methods and techniques, assessments and targets. Teachers have policies, procedures and regulations to adhere to and within organisations will have to take into consideration budgets and resources.

As a teaching assistant it is my responsibility to support the teacher in the planning of learning activities according to the relevant curriculum. This includes preparing, implementing and monitoring current and relevant curriculum topics. Planning learning activities should be based on the learner’s individual needs.   • Question 2: Describe your role in delivering learning activities.

When delivering learning activities it is vital, that as a teaching assistant my skills, knowledge and understanding of the planned topic are adequate. Allowing myself time to find the correct resources for both myself and the pupils. Having an effective partnership with the classroom teacher will enable me to understand my role in the delivery of activities.

Ensuring we are both aiming for the same outcome from the activity, that we are delivering the activity in the same way and support one another as well as the pupils to the best of our abilities. Understanding each learner and their individual needs, which resources are available and the learning objectives will enable the delivery of the activity to be more successful. After each activity, relaying back the results the classroom teacher is equally as important, as this feedback contributes the learner’s individual progress in the school and will help identify any weaknesses or strengths the student has.

  • Question 3: Make a list of the things expected from you as part of your role in supporting an individual pupil or group of pupils.

When teaching an individual pupil or a group of pupil it is of up most importance to identify their needs. Identifying the learner’s abilities and styles, disabilities and disadvantages, barriers, motivation and expectations are the initial assessment’s a teacher and teaching assistant will make.

Not only does this reassure the learner that their needs are being met and that they are important but it also enables me to plan accordingly, taking into account teaching methods, resource

requirements, individual learner targets and future assessments. It is my responsibility to ensure the students are in a safe learning environment, taking into consideration accessibility, and layout of classroom, other learners, equipment or tools. Recognising any learning or physical disabilities the pupils may have, gives me the opportunity to adapt the teaching methods and techniques that will be implemented.

Providing the individual with any support and assistance they need to progress their learning, which could be via one to one teaching or extra resources. Setting appropriate boundaries and guidelines that are realistic and achievable Ensuring that equality and diversity is included in the way teaching takes place- making references, topics and photographs relating to all religions, cultures, races etc. When making assessments ensure no discrimination takes place All recordings are reported back to the classroom teacher.

  • Question 4: Think about your role and responsibilities as a teaching assistant. List examples of your own general and specific tasks.

My roles and responsibilities as a teaching assistant are to; Support the pupils Support and assist the teacher Support the school Support the curriculum As a teaching assistant it is my job, to support pupils in the best way I can. I will do this by assessing each individual and recognising their needs. I will enable them to learn and feel safe and confident in school. Listening to them, understanding them and responding to their needs appropriately.

Giving them plenty of encouragement and being respectful will gain me their trust and confidence; this in turn will ensure the most effective learning process. Supporting the teaching staff will also result in the best learner

environment and outcomes for the pupils. I will work with the teachers to prepare lessons and discuss learning techniques for the class and individual pupils. Helping to asses, record and evaluate the pupils learning stages, and relaying relevant information about the pupils learning or behaviour progress back to the teacher.

Schools employ and have teaching assistants, to again, create the best possible learning environment for the pupils. As a teaching assistant I will work as part of a team working to make the pupils learning journey, a successful one. I will attend staff meetings and continue to develop my skills through in-house training and other relevant courses. I will maintain and contribute to school policies and procedures, and work in partnership with parents and carers on behalf of the school. Supporting the curriculum is also one of my roles. Under the guidance of a classroom teacher I will understand the theories of learning.

I will be aware of the development process in learning and any difficulties, the factors that affect pupils and how each national strategy works, including national numeracy and national literacy. In addition to these roles I will also have general tasks including; preparing classrooms and check safety of equipment, help pupils with physical disabilities, check and supervise pupils work, be encouraging towards pupils.

  • Question 5: Briefly describe the role of the teaching assistant in relation to the teacher.

As a teaching assistant it is my role to ‘assist’ the classroom/subject teacher. I will help the teacher to implement learning amongst the pupil’s. This may include preparing the classroom, tidying up after activities etc. general classroom duties that

are aiding the learning process, including; putting up displays, covering books and equipment, sharpening pencils etc. I will assist in assessing pupils and monitoring their progress in learning. Giving feedback to the teacher on individuals. The teacher has to supply a safe and supervised classroom for the pupils to learn in and it will be my responsibility to maintain this.

  • Question 6: Briefly outline the role and responsibilities of: head teacher; deputy/assistant head teacher; SENCO; key stage co-ordinators; subject co-ordinators; class/subject teachers.
  1. Head teacher: To provide effective and inspirational leadership in order for every pupil to fulfil their true potential. With the support of staff, the Governing Body and curriculum provide a safe and secure learning environment. Develop, motivate and lead all staff to achieve the highest professional standards. Ensure all policies are kept up to date, working closely with teaching staff and the Full Governing Body.
  2. Deputy/assistant head teacher: Responsible for working with and supporting the Head teacher. Sometimes keep a teaching role but with more managerial roles Second in command and will ‘step-in’ in the absence of head teacher Maintains motivation and career development amongst peers and colleagues
  3. SENCO: To support pupils with learning difficulties To support pupils with physical disabilities Supporting the teacher and school to promote learning and independent learning for pupils with disabilities and difficulties

    To promote independent learning from the pupils I will initially need to assess their abilities and learning capacities. After the initial assessment I will plan the promotion of independent learning through resources and teaching methods. I can adapt activities so they feel happy and confident about how they learn. Feedback from the pupil will enable me to ensure they are learning. Lots of encouragement and regular observation will make them feel comfortable in what they are doing.

    Supporting them throughout will allow me to assess them further and make evaluations on their progress. If they weren’t comfortable with independent learning I will need to reassess my methods and try something that will achieve the best outcome for the student. Resources could include ICT, practical work, verbal assessments or written work, each pupil is individual and need to learner that way. Recording the pupil’s needs will allow future learning to be more successful. Question 8 What strategies can be used to support pupils learning activities?

    To support the pupils in learning activities I will follow instructions from the classroom teacher. Using appropriate resources for the activity and following curriculum to meet the pupil’s needs. Where possible I can adapt the learning activity so the learner achieves the best results and gains

    the most from the activity. I will provide assistance where needed, support the pupils if necessary and encourage the pupils to learn. Observing the pupils throughout the activity will identify any weaknesses that can be helped or where the learning can be adapted.
