What is World Health Organization?

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the leading international organization dedicated to global health. It was established in 1948 as a specialized agency of the United Nations and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The WHO’s main mandate is to promote global health, prevent disease, and improve the quality of life for people around the world.The WHO works with governments, non-governmental organizations and other partners to develop and implement public health policies that are evidence-based and appropriate for each country’s needs. These strategies may include advocating for better nutrition and environmental protection, assuring access to safe drinking water, providing essential medicines or vaccines, improving sanitation services, strengthening healthcare systems or addressing special populations such as women who are pregnant or those living with HIV/AIDS. The WHO also plays an important role in providing financial support to countries struggling with poverty-related diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. Furthermore, it seeks to reduce child mortality through its Global Immunization Vision & Strategy (GIVS) initiative which aims at vaccinating children against infectious diseases like measles and diphtheria by 2020. Additionally,the WHO monitors outbreaks of infectious diseases such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), avian flu or Ebola virus disease. Overall The World Health Organization is an incredibly important international organization whose mission is integral for maintaining global health standards and promoting human well-being worldwide.
