What is United States Government?
The United States Government is a representative democracy and a constitutional republic. It is composed of three branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial, each with their own distinct powers and responsibilities. The executive branch is headed by the President of the United States, who serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces; enforces laws; appoints government officials; oversees foreign policy; and signs bills into law. The legislative branch consists of Congress, made up of two houses: the Senate and House of Representatives. Congress has the power to pass laws, impeach officials, ratify treaties, approve presidential appointments, raise revenue through taxes or borrowing money from other countries. The judicial branch comprises federal courts which interpret laws in accordance with the Constitution. The US Constitution establishes a system of checks and balances among its three branches that ensure that no one branch becomes too powerful or oversteps its bounds in terms of authority. Each branch can veto others’ decisions as well as review laws passed by Congress to determine their constitutionality. This system ensures that all branches are held accountable for their actions while protecting individual rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights such as freedom of speech or religion.
