What is National Security Policy?

National security policy is a set of guidelines and principles that govern how a nation protects itself, its citizens, and its interests. It encompasses both international and domestic considerations regarding a nation’s safety from threats posed by other nations, terrorist organizations, or other non-state actors. It also includes the development of strategies to protect the nation’s physical infrastructure, economic resources, political stability, and cultural identity.The United States’ national security policy is generally informed by its Constitution which grants Congress authority to provide for the common defense of the United States. The President is tasked with developing strategies to ensure the security of the country while Congress establishes laws necessary for implementation of those strategies. The Department of Defense (DoD), through its various branches such as Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines Corps are responsible for carrying out military operations abroad in order to protect U.S interests at home or abroad. Additionally, agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are charged with protecting U.S borders from potential threats abroad such as terrorism or illegal immigration while maintaining civil liberties within U.S borders through active enforcement measures and preventative measures like cyber-security protocols.
