What is Substance Use Disorders?
Substance Use Disorders are a serious mental health disorder that is characterized by an individual’s inability to control the use of drugs or alcohol. Individuals with Substance Use Disorders have a preoccupation with using substances, resulting in impaired functioning and distress that often leads to physical and psychological problems. It is estimated that approximately 23 million people struggle with Substance Use Disorders in the United States. The effects of Substance Use Disorders can be devastating, both for the individuals suffering from them as well as their families and communities. People struggling with Substance Use Disorders often experience physical and psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, increased risk of injury or illness due to drug or alcohol use, financial problems due to excessive spending on drugs or alcohol, relationship issues due to impaired judgment or behavior caused by substance use, legal issues related to substance abuse laws, and social isolation due to withdrawal from friends and family members. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available for those who suffer from Substance Use Disorders. Treatment typically begins with detoxification during which the individual abstains from using substances while under medical supervision; this is followed by counseling which may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), group therapy sessions or support groups such as 12-step programs; medication may also be prescribed depending on the severity of symptoms. Non-traditional treatments such as yoga, meditation and nutrition have also been found helpful in aiding recovery. It is important for individuals battling a Substance Use Disorder not feel ashamed or embarrassed about seeking helpin fact it takes courage to reach out for help when faced with this type of problem. With proper treatment and support there is hope that individuals struggling with this disorder can lead fulfilling lives free from dependence on drugs or alcohol.
