What is School Age Children?
School age children are those between the ages of 5 and 12. This is an important stage in any child’s life, as it marks the transition from a preschooler to an adolescent. During this time, children learn how to interact with their peers and develop social skills, explore their interests and build self-confidence, gain knowledge about the world around them, and begin to understand concepts such as responsibility and respect. The key element for school age children is structure. Having a daily routine helps them feel secure and provides boundaries that help them stay on track while they learn what they need at this stage of life. School plays an important role in helping children establish routines by providing guidance on when they eat breakfast or lunch, when school starts and ends each day, when homework must be completed, etc. Parents should also establish house rules concerning bedtimes or screen time to provide structure for their home environment. In addition to providing structure for learning purposes, school age children need plenty of opportunities to play with friends in order to develop social skills such as teamwork and cooperation. Recess is a great opportunity for unstructured play that builds these skills but parents can also arrange outdoor activities or plan trips with friends that allow kids to explore new places together while having fun along the way. Finally, school age children need plenty of encouragement from both teachers and parents if they are going to learn effectively and stay motivated throughout their education journey. Recognizing accomplishments big or small can go a long way in boosting self-esteem while also inspiring kids with confidence needed when tackling new tasks or difficult problems.
