and Adolescent DevelopmentSchool age child and adolescent development is a complex process that covers the physical, psychological, social, and cognitive growth of children. It is important for parents to understand how their child’s development progresses throughout their school years, as it can provide them with insight into how best to help their child grow and reach their potential. Physically, during the school age years children are undergoing rapid physical growth and changes in body shape as they become taller and heavier. Boys tend to enter puberty earlier than girls do but both sexes experience height spurts, changing body shapes, changes in skin texture and tone, changing features such as facial hair or breast development. During this time adolescents may also have issues with self-esteem related to their physical appearance or they may have difficulty adjusting to these new changes in their body. Psychologically, during the school age years a child’s personality begins to emerge more distinctly with an increased awareness of emotions such as empathy towards others. They begin to develop problem solving skills through reasoning as well as greater independence from authority figures such as parents or teachers by developing stronger decision making abilities which can be challenging for adults at times. Adolescents grapple with issues related to identity formation including exploring values which will guide them through life choices such as career paths or relationships amongst other things. Socially, during the school age years children learn about cooperation and compromise through interactions with peers at home or in groups settings like schools or sports teams etc. Here they learn about rules of social conduct including acceptable behavior towards others by learning the importance of communication within relationships either between friends or family members. With increasing autonomy adolescents form increasingly longer lasting relationships based on trust while developing an understanding on how reciprocity works in maintaining those relationships over time. Cognitively during this period children’s brains are particularly active allowing them greater access to information regarding abstract concepts so that they can better comprehend cause-effect relationships between events around them allowing for better decision making capabilities due increased knowledge gained over time either through books/media/other sources etc.
