What is Mary Parker Follett?
Mary Parker Follett was a pioneering social reformer, management consultant, and theorist of the 20th century. She was born in 1868 in Quincy, Massachusetts and raised with her siblings by her mother due to her father’s death when she was young. As a young adult, Mary became enthralled in the study of philosophy and political science at Radcliffe College and later Harvard University. After finishing her degree at Harvard, she began working as a social worker in Boston. It is during this time that Mary formulated many of the ideas that would become foundational to the field of management consulting. The most significant contribution Mary made to modern management theory is her idea of power with rather than power over which she believed could create an environment for positive collaboration between individuals or groups within an organization. She also saw power as something that could be shared among people rather than something that someone had total control over another person or group. This idea has been used to create successful teams and organizations by fostering trust, communication, cooperation, participation and mutual respect among those involved for the greater good of all members involved. In addition to these theories on power dynamics within an organization, Mary Parker Follett also wrote extensively about life experiences as well as democracy in organizations while advocating for women’s rights during a time when they were largely overlooked. Her works also covered topics such as conflict resolution and how it should be managed through negotiation between different parties without resorting to violence or coercion. Mary Parker Follett’s theories on power still remain relevant today; they are applicable not just within corporations but also other areas such as education and politics where collaboration is essential for progress to occur without resorting to authoritarianism or oppression. In recognition of her groundbreaking work within the fields of sociology and business management, Mary Parker Follett has been credited with being one of the founding mothers of modern management theory which continues influencing decision makers today both inside and outside corporate structures worldwide .
