What is AP Environmental Science?
AP Environmental Science (or APES) is an interdisciplinary college-level course that covers the scientific principles of ecology, geology, chemistry and other natural sciences in order to understand how Earth’s environment works. This course challenges students to think critically about the interactions among humans and their natural environment. It also encourages them to develop solutions related to environmental issues and dilemmas. The curriculum for this advanced placement course focuses on five major topics: energy resources, air pollution and climate change, water resources management, land use management, and biodiversity conservation. Throughout the year, students will gain a better understanding of these topics by completing several lab activities designed to assess how human actions can impact ecosystems both positively and negatively. In addition to lab activities, students are required to write papers or analyze data from real life case studies that discuss current environmental issues. These tasks help solidify student’s knowledge of various topics such as global warming and acid rain while also giving them practice in taking initiative in researching solutions for environmental problems. At the end of the year, each student takes an exam that tests their understanding of the material covered throughout the course. The final score determines if a student receives credit towards college level courses at universities worldwide or earns an Advanced Placement designation which makes them eligible for college credits prior to entering university programs around North America. Overall, AP Environmental Science provides students with a comprehensive look into Earth’s delicate balance between its inhabitants (humans) and its environment making it essential for all aspiring environmentalists who wish to make a difference.
