At this stage in your Japanese studies, it’s more important to gather the gist of a conversation than to pick up on smaller details. You will likely need to take notes through the listening exercise to stay organized, and you may need to repeat the listening exercise once or twice.
From the answer chart, we know what kinds of answers we need to listen for. A good strategy for these exercises is to spend some time looking at the answer chart to figure out what information demands our attention. Once we look at the chart, we learn that the most important information to track is: who is saying what; what kind of person each contestant likes; and what each contestant does on the weekends. If we can gather all of that information, we can answer the question correctly. Check the explanation cells for the answer.

Here we can use context clues to help us listen for the right answer. Since we know the set up of the question is a dating show, we can guess that Ms. Suzuki will make her selection toward the end of the recording. We can also expect the presenter to ask her whom she will pick, thus likely using some kind of question word such as ‘だれ’ or ‘どんな.’ If we listen carefully enough, we hear that Ms. Suzuki chooses ‘吉田(よしだ)’. The answer is ‘a.’
