All employees in different work situations experience dissimilar behavior of their boss, but they believe that some same qualities are visible on them. In my view and especially, considering the nature of field I belong to (which is providing health care to sick patients), a lead tech (supervisor) who is in charge over his employees for achieving the main goals of his/her company should have a number of characteristics such as good-mannerism, impartiality, consideration, effective communication skills and highly ethical behavior.

In this reflective essay, I will try to word my understanding of a successful supervisor and how this course (Introduction to Applied Supervision) has made me aware of the necessary skills to be one in the future. Mercy health has many facilities and hospitals nationwide, which are considered a leading provider of compassionate care and community access to quality health care services that improve the health of individuals and community. As a member of Catholic health east, the mission of Mercy health Systems is to be a partner in the healing ministry of the catholic Church in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy and Hope Ministries. I would also like to briefly touch on the natures of job I and Marc perform and our responsibilities in radiology department.

supervision of an attending physician (Radiologist) and lead technologist (Marc Caballero). My main job requirement is to provide the Radiologists with quality images of patients by utilizing different protocols and using various pulse sequences, so the physicians may make proper diagnosis and provide care to individuals and community. Marc has been working at Mercy Philadelphia for last 3 years.

He has been a licensed technologist for about 11 years now, and has worked at several trauma and non-trauma facilities all across the tri state area. Besides scheduling, organizing and keeping up with the staff meetings, some of Marc’s responsibilities are to keep the MRI staff updated on the new sequential protocols of diagnostic imaging for the Radiologists, make sure that his staff is following the safety consideration policies regarding patients within the MRI department and most importantly keep up the morals of the department by being a good and approachable leader.

His work ethics and style of being a team member has put him in a leading position of our department. In the following paragraphs, I will examine some of the wonderful qualities Marc depicts in his position as a lead-technologist of MRI department. First and far most, a manager/supervisor should behave polite. I have noticed this quality of Marc from day one. Marc believes that as the productivity of his department (and company) demands directly on him and his team (subordinates), he has to treat them well.

He often says, “A high-quality worker-supervisor relationship leads us to not only perform our duties, but also makes us standout in Radiology department”. Besides, if he was to doubt our technical skills or considered his employees as foolish as possible,

trust factor can vanish and disorder within the department can occur. Secondly, a supervisor should be fair to his co-workers. Marc has proven himself as an impartial lead technologist by treating his staff fairly. He knows exactly how to balance the work load.

He doesn’t let some of the members of his staff do many things while others only do a few things. If he gives me a task for instance, he makes me aware of it well in advance. Moreover, he doesn’t ask his employees to complete a project in a few days that actually requires half a month to do. After taking this course (Introduction to Applied Supervision), I have come to realize that a poor supervisor never considers his employees feeling. A poor supervisor is usually not a good planner, so he is very nervous when a task comes to its eadline, and he will use his fault to punish his staff. A supervisor like this would certainly not benefit the company or any business.

Thirdly, a good supervisor cares for his staff and the people he is dealing with, be them customers or patients (in hospital environment). He is aware of your feelings and emotions. Marc treats his staff like family members. He is gentle, cheerful and a very considerate person. Smile always appears on his face when he greets his staff or the patients.

If any of Marc’s employees make a mistake, he doesn’t rush to criticize him or her. Instead he first figures out the reason and the cause of the wrong deed. If it’s a technical issue that requires his immediate attention, he takes the time to teach and train the

employee. By saying that, I don’t mean that a boss should always be lenient. What I mean is that a boss should consider himself or herself equal to the employee as human beings. In that case, both parties can reach an understanding on the basic of mutual respect.

Another crucial feature of a boss is communication skills. The duty of a supervisor is to give instructions and directions to his or her employees. If the purpose and the means are not clearly explained, employees may feel lost and not aware as to how to perform their required tasks. Again, Marc is an expert in explaining a task. He usually not only lets us know what and how we should perform a given job, but also stirs up every employees’ interest and enthusiasm in the task to be done by using effective communication skills.

Lastly, Marc encourages a sense of unity, togetherness and an increased optimism across all areas of the Radiology department. He has adopted such a great ethical behavior that everyone in the department respects him and wants to work with him. He has made it not only a personal goal, but a departmental one to be more conscious to take the time and converse, greet and thank colleagues for the great job that they perform day in and day out, and to simply thank them for the very privilege of being able to work along with them.

He teaches his staff to be proactive, rather than reactive. Marc explains to his staff that one can only truly address a scenario when he/she has a concise complete view of all the facts. He further explains that by

obtaining a more comprehensive analysis of a situation, it lends you the ability to see not only the immediate circumstances, but circumstances as a result of your decisions and or actions. I will like to emphasize on the importance of ethics a little more, since it’s the most crucial subject as far as health and care giving is concerned among health care workers.

Because of phenomena such as the emergence of a global perspective in almost every field and because of the ubiquitous, instant, and anonymous communication afforded by the internet, unethical excesses can be easily exposed and disseminated – at little or no cost. But the field of health care is a little different where the approach is face to face and the emphasis is upon one’s health. A leader, supervisor or lead-technologist (for the purpose of this essay) can’t hide behind the barriers of language, geography, ethnicity, or cover-up tactics.

In this interconnected world of health care, only ethical leaders will survive. In conclusion, the supervisor or lead technologist such as Mr. Caballero, who plays a main role in his department and (in a broader sense) for the organization, should have the best qualities to manage his staff. Behaving good and polite helps him to provide a climate of cooperation between staff and him, also this behavior brings a sense of respect within the department. Being impartial to others causes a good spirit of trust and encourages his subordinates to work as a team.

By showing consideration towards his subordinates and staff, a supervisor may avail the opportunity to show proof of his loyalty towards his staff. As a supervisor, effective communication skills can be vital

to increasing the productivity and improving the quality in the work of employees. And good ethical values of a supervisor can make him a great leader and a good role model, which are not only beneficial for the business or organization, but are important for one’s own moral growth.
