Curriculum: A History of the American Undergraduate Course of Study Since 1636 Essay Example
In his 1993 book Curriculum: A History of the American Undergraduate Course of Study Since 1636, Frederick Rudolph discusses the socio-political evolution of the American education system. He notes that while America achieved political independence from Britain, it took longer for other social systems, including education, to develop their own distinct American identity. Rudolph believes that transitioning to a liberal and utilitarian approach to education was challenging due to the preference of intellectuals and educational institutions for less than democratic perspectives. The Yale Report of 1828 reflects this trend; at its worst, education was viewed as a discriminatory factor of social class, while at its best, it was thought that
...no new educational system could be comparable to classical traditions. The report was largely subscribed to by educators who believed it to be true because Yale University was the country's premier educational institution. This hindered educational reform for almost 50 years.Rudolph concludes that the development of the national and international identity of the United States is responsible for the future adoption of non-English curricular models.
In the 17th century, Rudolph observed that the American educational system needed to change to align with ideals of social liberty, free enterprise, and democracy. This shift reflects a society in transition, creating its own educational standards to reinforce its identity and values.
