Functional Skills encompass vital elements of English, Maths, and ICT that are customized for practical application in everyday scenarios, which students encounter frequently. Mastering these skills is crucial for succeeding in a professional environment and opening doors to further education. Across all subjects, proficiency in both English and Maths is essential, while ICT has emerged as a core competency in a large proportion of businesses. To ensure accessibility, Functional Skills will be offered at various levels including Foundation, Higher, and Advanced Diplomas alongside Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications, or they can be taken as a substitute for Key Skills qualifications. This approach leads to greater retention of information compared to simply being told the process. At higher levels, students can enhance their understanding of Functional Skills by creating and releasing their own music. An assignment based on this concept would require developing a business plan that includes financial costing and written content. The student needs knowledge of various software packages as well as a solid understanding of Mathematics and English.
Geoff Petty suggest
that in a class with a mix of students who have different levels of musical and academic abilities, open tasks should be chosen over closed tasks. This approach benefits both able and moderately able students. (Petty, 1998) The University of Liverpool explains that Functional/Key Skills are implicit in a Music Degree and cannot be assessed separately from other components. (University of Liverpool 2009) When studying Music Technology, it is evident that all stages involve the individual elements of Functional Skill and provide an environment for students to learn and improve their skills.
