Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a number calculated from an individual’s weight and height. It is used to measure body fatness, and can be helpful in determining if someone is overweight or obese. While BMI does not directly measure the amount of fat in an individual’s body, it can give a general indication of overall health.A healthy BMI range for adults falls between 18.5 and 24.9. A person with a BMI lower than 18.5 may be considered underweight; while those with a BMI over 25 are considered overweight or obese depending on other risk factors such as age and waist circumference. It should also be noted that individuals who are highly muscular may have higher BMIs but have no increased risk of developing obesity-related conditions because muscle weighs more than fat mass which affects the calculation of their BMI score even though they may not actually be carrying excess weight from fat tissue accumulation(1). BMI can help identify potential health risks associated with being either too thin or too heavy for one’s specific frame size (2). For example, research has shown that those whose BMIs exceed 30 kg/m2 are at greater risk for developing chronic diseases including stroke, heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer (3). In addition to physical health concerns related to excessive body weight, individuals with high BMIs often experience mental strain due to feelings of inadequacy when compared to society’s ideal image standards (4). Because Body Mass Index only provides an estimate based on two measurements ” height and weight ” it cannot provide all necessary information about an individual’s personal health status without taking into consideration additional factors such as age, gender and activity level (5). Therefore it should always be used in conjunction with other tests such as skinfold measurements or bioelectrical impedance analysis before making any definitive conclusions regarding one’s overall fitness levels (6). In conclusion, Body Mass Index is a useful tool for determining general body composition however it should not replace other assessments by medical professionals since it cannot account for every factor affecting one’s personal health status.
