Nursing education will foster a lifelong learning culture by updating the curriculum to adapt to changes over time. The IOM report supports a shift in the nursing field and promotes advancements in science and technology. Through education, the IOM aims to address the growing demand for nurses by equipping them with new skills and knowledge. This will ultimately result in improved services and meeting the healthcare needs of society.

Nursing Practice

The report suggests that nursing practice should align with the education and training received. To achieve this, it is necessary to transform the healthcare system and restructure the roles of healthcare providers, including nurses (The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, 2016). The recommendation aims to expand the scope of nursing professionals' roles and address the barriers they face in responding to the evolving healthcare environment (Niezen ; Mathijssen, 2014).

Some obstacles faced by nursing professionals include strict policies and regulations, fragmentation of the healthcare system, high turnover rates, challenges in transitioning from school to the work environment, and demographic challenges. Addressing these barriers will have a significant impact on nursing practice, particularly in primary care. With these barriers mitigated, nursing practitioners (NPs) will have more employment opportunities and improved healthcare delivery options. Reimbursement procedures from insurance agencies will also be enhanced, and NPs will be easily accredited as primary healthcare providers (Reinhard ; Hassmiller, 2012). To ensure a smooth transition from school to the workplace, students will undergo training experiences at teaching hospitals.

By exposing students

to primary healthcare settings, their competency in primary healthcare will be improved, thereby reducing the turnover rate caused by inexperienced nurses. Additionally, the IOM report recommends that nurses collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to redesign the US healthcare system, leading to a transformed healthcare system.

According to The Future of Nursing: Leading Change (2016), full partnership in healthcare requires collaboration with other specialists. This involves identifying problems, areas of wastage, and creating and implementing improvement plans. Adjustments must be made over time to achieve established goals. The report recognizes the responsibility of all nursing professionals to advocate for their patients. To have a meaningful impact on healthcare reforms, nurses must use their advocacy skills and actively engage in the development and redesigning of policies. They should not just passively receive policies but actively participate and contribute to their creation.

According to Nursingcenter (2016), nurses are now being recognized as strategic thinkers and decision-makers, marking a shift from their previous role as aides to physicians. They are no longer solely tasked with completing delegated tasks, but are seen as full stakeholders and partners in the healthcare system. As leaders, nurses will be responsible for implementing ideas, designing projects, and advocating for ongoing initiatives (Adeniran, 2013).

The IOM employs different strategies to empower nurses and help them achieve their goals. As nurses take on leadership roles, they will work closely with other healthcare providers, fostering collaboration and respect. This implementation will result in better medical outcomes and reduced errors.

Collaborating with an established higher education institution is vital to meet educational standards and advance research and learning for the betterment of patients. Engaging in a residence-based mentorship program will also contribute to leadership development and partnership-building, resulting in improved retention, medical outcomes, and cost effectiveness. As a healthcare provider, it is my duty to fulfill roles such as managing information to master technological tools.
