What is Social Security Card?
A Social Security Card is a document used to verify the identity of individuals in United States and other countries. The Social Security Card is issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and contains a unique identification number for an individual. It is typically required when applying for jobs, receiving social benefits, filing taxes or opening bank accounts. The Social Security Number (SSN) was first established as part of the New Deal programs during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency in 1935. Initially intended to be used only internally within the SSA, it was eventually adopted by private businesses as a means of verifying personal information such as age, address and place of employment. This practice has since become commonplace throughout all US government agencies and many private institutions including employers, banks, healthcare providers and more. The card itself does not contain any personal information about the holder – just their name and SSN embossed onto it – but it does provide proof that someone exists with that particular SSN/identification number on record with the SSA. As such its use in verifying identities can help to prevent fraud or misuse of benefits by those who may not actually qualify for them due to lack of relevant documentation from other sources such as birth certificates etc.. To further protect against fraudulent use, most cards also include a photo ID feature which must be matched up before they can be used successfully at places like banks etc.. In recent years there have been increasing concerns around privacy issues surrounding the use of this type of identification system due to worries over potential data breaches leading to theft or misuse of personal information recorded on these cards if they were ever lost or stolen. As such steps have been taken both by governmental bodies and financial institutions alike to ensure better security measures are put in place which includes stronger encryption techniques combined with biometric methods like fingerprints or iris scans whenever possible so that people’s identities can be verified without their having to carry around physical documents like these cards anymore than necessary. All-in-all then it appears clear that while social security cards remain an important part of our lives today especially when dealing with government agencies proper caution needs still need to be taken when using them so that sensitive information remains secure at all times.
