What is Rome?
Rome is one of the most famous cities in the world and has a long and interesting history. Rome was founded in 753 BC by the mythical twin brothers Romulus and Remus, who were said to have been nursed by a she-wolf. It quickly grew to become a powerful city-state, as it had access to many resources due to its location near the Mediterranean Sea. Rome became an empire in 27 BC under the rule of Julius Caesar. The Roman Empire was one of the most impressive political entities ever created, controlling much of Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia at its peak. Its influence on modern society can still be seen today through its legal system, language (Latin), architecture (the Colosseum), and engineering achievements such as roads and aqueducts. Rome also played an important role in religion with Christianity becoming official during Emperor Constantine’s reign in 313 AD. The Vatican City remains an important center for Catholicism today. Additionally, Rome is home to some of Italy’s most impressive artworks including Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes and Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers sculpture from St Peter’s Square. For centuries Rome has been hailed as one of the world’s greatest cities it continues to be a popular destination for tourists wanting to experience some of civilization’s greatest accomplishments for themselves.
