What is Renaissance?
The Renaissance was a period of great artistic and cultural flourishing in Europe, beginning in Italy in the 14th century and lasting through the 17th century. The term Renaissance is derived from the French word for rebirth, referring to the revival of interest in classical art, literature, science, and philosophy that characterized this period. During the Renaissance, there were advances in political thought and humanistic philosophy as well as economic growth and technological advances. The Renaissance began with a renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman culture which was driven by increased contact between Europeans and people from other parts of the world. This led to a rediscovery of many ancient texts that had been forgotten during the Middle Ages. This knowledge allowed scholars to make connections between different disciplines such as mathematics, science, literature, history, etc., which laid the foundation for modern scholarship. Additionally, advancements made during this period changed how art was produced; oil painting replaced tempera painting while sculpture became more realistic due to advances in anatomy studies. At its core though, what made this era so remarkable was its emphasis on human potentialthe belief that anyone could attain greatness if they worked hard enough at itwhich fundamentally changed how people viewed themselves and their place within society. This new way of thinking allowed individuals to challenge authority figures while also allowing them greater freedom to explore their own interests without fear of repercussions from societal expectations or religious doctrine. In sum then, we can see that during this time period Europe experienced an unprecedented level of social change both politically and culturally which ultimately shaped much of our current understanding about ourselves today.
