What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It can cause feelings of fear, helplessness and horror that stay with a person long after the initial trauma has passed. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, difficulty sleeping, anxiety and feeling detached from people and activities.The causes of PTSD are not fully understood but there are certain risk factors such as having experienced childhood abuse or neglect; being exposed to violence in the home or community; being exposed to combat situations; surviving natural disasters and other traumatic events. People with pre-existing mental health conditions such as depression or substance use disorders may also be at an increased risk for developing PTSD. It is important to know how to identify signs of PTSD so that individuals can get help if needed. Some common symptoms include intrusive thoughts about the trauma, avoidance of places or things associated with the experience, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep patterns and mood swings . Other signs can include irritability, outbursts of anger, hypervigilance and exaggerated startle response when startled by loud noises or unexpected movements. Treatment for PTSD typically includes psychotherapy as well as medications such as antidepressants which help reduce stress hormones like cortisol levels in the body. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is often used to help individuals process their memories related to the trauma while learning new ways of coping with distressful emotions they may experience due to it. Other types of therapy such as Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) have proven effective for some people who suffer from PTSD . Additionally lifestyle changes such as exercise , yoga ,mindfulness meditation and relaxation techniques may contribute towards improving overall wellbeing . For those suffering from severe cases medication alone may not be enough so it’s important to work closely with your doctor if you think you might benefit from these treatments alongside traditional medical therapies.. In conclusion , Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects millions worldwide each year however early intervention through proper treatment plans tailored specifically towards individual needs can lead them back on track towards living life once again without fear , terror or panic attacks caused by past traumas .
