What is Nutrition Facts Label?
Nutrition Facts labels are an important tool for helping people make informed decisions about their diet. These labels provide consumers with information on the amount of calories, fat, sodium, carbohydrates, protein and other nutrients in a given food. They also list ingredients and potential allergens that may be present in the product. Knowing what is in the food we eat can help us make healthier choices and maintain our health.Calories give us an indication of how much energy is available from eating a particular food. By looking at the calorie count for different foods, we can compare them to decide which foods to choose for a healthy diet. Calories from fat should be limited to no more than 30% of total calories consumed each day. Next on the label are fats, which are broken down into two categories: saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Saturated fats should generally be avoided as they contribute to higher levels of cholesterol in the blood stream which can lead to heart disease or stroke; however unsaturated fats such as those found in fish, nuts and avocados are beneficial for health and should be included as part of a healthy diet. Sodium intake should also be limited as too much sodium can contribute to high blood pressure and other health problems associated with salt consumption such as heart disease or stroke; most nutrition labels will list low-sodium versions of products when available. Carbohydrates provide our bodies with energy but some types like refined sugars or processed grains can have negative effects on our health when eaten in excess so it’s important to look at both total carbohydrates listed on the label along with fiber content (which offers benefits such as reducing cholesterol levels).
