What is Helicobacter Pylori Infection?

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an infectious bacterium that can cause a variety of gastrointestinal diseases, including peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. It is estimated that nearly half of the world’s population carries this bacteria in their digestive tracts, although only a small number develop serious health complications as a result. Treatment usually involves antibiotics to kill off the bacteria and medications to reduce acid levels in the stomach which will help reduce irritation and healing times for any existing ulcers caused by the infection.
