What is Late Middle Ages?
The Late Middle Ages, also known as the ‘Late Medieval Period’, was a time of great change and transformation in Europe. The period began in the late 13th century and lasted until the early 16th century, making it one of the longest periods of European history. During this time, Europe underwent significant political, social, economic and religious changes which played an important role in the development of modern European society.Politically speaking, Europe saw a decline in power for many feudal lords and kings. This was partly due to a weakening of royal authority as kings had to contend with powerful barons who formed large regional states known as principalities. This led to increased decentralisation within Europe as local rulers gained more control over their lands whilst still being subject to the crown’s authority. In addition to this decline in power for feudal lords and monarchs, there were major changes to government structures such as representative assemblies which acted on behalf of citizens while maintaining their rights and freedoms. In terms of social life during this period, many aspects were transformed including family dynamics and gender roles. Women’s roles became more socially accepted than ever before with some even becoming leaders within politics or religion; although women still faced discrimination overall due to their secondary status compared to men. Additionally, family life changed drastically towards nuclear families rather than extended families living together; thus leading to increased privacy from neighbours and other family members who used to live together under one roof. Economically speaking, trade networks flourished across Europe thanks largely due to technological developments such as new ships which allowed merchants access routes into distant lands across seas such as India or Africa instead of just travelling by land alone like before; therefore allowing for goods from far away places like spices or silk cloths being introduced into everyday European life.
