Cancer is a serious, life-threatening disease that can have devastating consequences. Unhealthy lifestyle choices and environmental exposures can increase the risk of developing cancer. The following are some of the most common factors that may lead to an increased risk of cancer:1. Smoking tobacco: Cigarette smoking is linked to many types of cancers, including lung cancer, throat cancer, oral cavity cancer, and pancreatic cancer. The more cigarettes you smoke per day or over your lifetime, the greater your risk for developing these cancers. 2. Obesity: Being overweight or obese can increase your risk for certain types of cancers such as colon, endometrial (uterine), esophageal and kidney cancer. 3. Diet: Eating a diet high in processed foods and red meat increases your risk for certain types of cancers like colorectal and prostate cancer. Eating a lot of fruits and vegetables may reduce your risk for these cancers as well as breast and stomach cancers 4 .Inactivity: Not getting enough physical activity has been linked with an increased risk for colorectal, breast and endometrial (uterine) cancers 5 .Alcohol consumption: Drinking large amounts of alcohol regularly increases your risk for mouth and throat cancers as well as liver cirrhosis which is a precursor to liver cancer 6 .Sun exposure : Prolonged exposure to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds increases your chances for skin melanoma which is one type of skin cancer 7 .Environmental pollutants : Exposure to certain industrial chemicals such as asbestos or benzene can increase one’s chances for developing lung or mesothelioma (lung)cancer respectively 8 .Family history : Having family members who have had certain types of cancers such as colon , ovarian , prostate ,or breast increases one’s chances at developing these same types of cancers too.
